Welcome to Glasgowhill Collies We are located next to the sandy shores of Lake Huron in beautiful Bruce County, Ontario, Canada. Our start into collies began in 1984, in which we have been dedicated to preserving the grace and elegance of this magnificent breed. We are always striving to improve and learn as much as we can about this breed and this is always on going . We do breed for normal eyes although this is not our main focus as there as so many aspects to breeding and with out giving up anything that we have worked so hard for .The integration Of normal eyes and Non Carriers Of CEA into my existing breeding program started Five years ago it has been a learning experience and it should be .There are many others whom I have Admired in this breed all over the world but I have always walked to the beat of my own drum and will continue to do so some don't understand why I prefer to work alone but that's not my problem maybe it's because it's all about the breed for me and not about all the back stabbing in my breed there is a lot of that in the dog game and I prefer to not be apart of it ,I mentor in my breed and that is very rewarding and much more important . . Breeding top quality collies with that loyal collie temperament, excellent physical soundness, genetic health & super intelligence is my priority Our collies are recognized around the world our collies have often been referred to as the CLASSIC COLLIE We feel we have not followed any fads and have kept the collie to the Standard With great consideration to DNA markers for my breed . We provide life-long assistance for our puppies' families. We breed for all colors in both Rough and Smooth and from time to time occasionally have CEA non-carriers available. We breed selectively we breed only if we have the puppies placed in homes this is why we have a waiting list for I feel that great things are worth waiting for , breeding to improve our bloodline and collie health in general. We have bred Many Canadian Champions that are listed at bottom of page BEST PUPPY IN SHOW winners and SPECIALTY Winners . We have had one of our collies compete at Westminster Kennel Club Dog show in New York city . And made Canadian collie history by exporting Two Canadian Champion Males Can Ch Glasgowhill's With Pride And Can Ch Glasgowhill's Future Vision to the UK CEA PRA MDR1 normal with one Qualifying for Crufts on UK soil and according to the UK Collie Archives He was the First Canadian Collie to ever do this . The Other also Qualified but did so in Canada by achieving his Canadian championship in the ownership of his owners in the UK , We also made Canadian Collie History By breeding and Exporting the First Canadian Bred Collie to Thailand ...Thai Ch Glasgowhill's Pure Perfection "Tori" Obtained her championship under the age of one year she is also a CEA PRA Non Carrier and MDR1 normal she is also the first ever Canadian Bred Thai Champion . We do health testing and DNA testing provide all this information to ALL our puppy buyers We do Hips , DNA optigen testing for CEA and PRA , MDR1 , Thyroid and Cardiac ,Buying a new puppy or dog is a large commitment. You are taking on a responsibility for the next 10 - 15 years. Once you have decided which breed is appropriate for you the next step is finding a responsible breeder. But what exactly is a responsible breeder? First of all let us rule out pet stores, puppy mills, and backyard breeders. The chief reason these people breed dogs is to make a profit. They want to keep their costs down and their profits high. However breeding dogs is an expensive endeavor. Done properly there is no profit to be made. But what exactly distinguishes a responsible breeder from those who are out to make a profit. There are many factors.Frst and foremost responsible breeders are not breeding to make a profit, but for the betterment of the breed. They strive to continually improve the quality of the dogs they are breeding. They are breeding to the standard for the breed. The standard is a written description of the breed that portrays the ideal specimen for the breed. Breeders who show their dogs are generally striving for the ideal in their breed. But this is not the only criteria of a responsible breeder .A responsible breeder breeds only healthy dogs. All breeds have particular health and genetic concerns that plaque them. All dogs who are bred should have all the health testing done that is particular for their breed this includes any DNA Makers found for that breed , plus a genetic history work up of their ancestors. Health concerns such as epilepsy, Bloat DM , and thyroid disorder, elbow and hip dysplasia are all concerns and can raise their ugly heads generally in the first several years or longer. Responsible breeders always give health guarantees with their puppies. This can range from a simple 3 day health guarantee to a lifetime guarantee for certain genetic defects. They should provide a written guarantee along with a health record. They will always take back any puppy or dog purchased from them. And be able to provide a lifetime home for that dog if the dog is not place able for whatever reason.They sell their pet quality dogs on a spay neuter agreements. A responsible breeder does not want their pet quality dogs being bred. Since betterment of the breed is first and foremost a pet quality dog should never be bred.They raise their puppies in their home, underfoot. The puppies receive lots of socialization and are not stuck in someone's kennel or basement with little or no interaction with humans. Puppies should not leave the breeder until they are a minimum of 8 -12 weeks of age, preferably 10-12. They need to stay with their litter mates and their mother to learn proper socialization skills. In addition most breeds go through a fear period during this time in their life. Puppies who go to their new homes at 5-6 weeks are doomed to having many behavior problems later in life. Responsible breeders screen their prospective buyers making sure the potential new owner is suitable. Ideally references are asked for. They also stay in contact with the puppy's new owner. They are there if needed for advise and encouragement. They want to stay involved in their puppies' lives. A responsible breeder will be sure to inform any prospective new owners on the pros and cons of their particular breeds. If a breeder only tells you all the good things about their breed then find another breeder. He is trying to make a sale not making sure his puppies end up in suitable homes.
